Weardale Railway Youth Team (WRYT) is open to young people living in County Durham aged 10 to 17 and offers members a training programme covering both railway and non-railway related subjects, visits to other railways and special events, and from age 11, the opportunity to be involved with the day-to-day running of the railway under the supervision of experienced members of staff, including, working alongside the Guard, Travelling Ticket Inspector, Controller, Crossing Keeper, Station Maintenance staff, in the depot, in the station cafe and gift shop and also special events both on and off train.
Members aged 16 & 17 also get the opportunity to train as cleaners as part of the steam loco crew and diesel secondmen (trainee driver).
WRYT members also get the opportunity to help with events that take place away from the operational railway, such as assisting at trade stands promoting the railway and other marketing initiatives.
We have a team based in Stanhope and a new team based in Bishop Auckland. WRYT is open to residents of County Durham only.
To become a member of the WRYT you must live in County Durham and also join the Weardale Railway Trust. Trust membership is required so that you are insured whilst working on the railway. The cost is £8 per year and you should bring this when you come along for your Youth Team induction session.
