Minbus appeal sponsored walk

October 2011

Sponsored Walk:

On Sunday 9th October 14 members of WRYT along with adult volunteers, friends and dogs did a sponsored walk from Wolsingham station to Stanhope station in support of the WRYT minibus appeal raising in excess of £1,000

Youth Team Carriage Project:

During early 2010 the Youth Team were successful in gaining funding from Durham County Council for the purchase of a Mk2 railway carriage (number 5226) which will become the new home of the WRYT at Stanhope station and will also provide a home for the WRYT model railway exhibition which will be open to the public at weekends, during holidays and special events.

Progress has been slow in carrying out internal and bodywork repairs due to a lack of technical support, however, due to the determination of the WRYT members the carriage is just about ready with most of the internal and extenal work now complete, all that is now required are for the last remaining lights to be wired up and the body painted.

A project group has now been formed looking at the installation of the carriage into the old loading dock platform at Stanhope station.

Photos below show before and after shots of the interior.

The train now arriving at Platform 3...

Well, here it is folks! The day a lot of us have been waiting for, for nearly 2 years. WRYT coach 5226 is now in place at "Platform 3" at Stanhope Station.

5226 has been painted in a red oxide undercoat and will have its overcoat completed in early 2012 on site. Currently work is ongoing getting 5226 ready to be transformed into Santa's Grotto, after which it will become the new training and meeting room for WRYT and the permanent home of the WRYT model railway display which will be open to the public at weekends.
